Standards
National Standards for Physical Education
Physical activity is critical to the development
and maintenance of good health. The goal
of physical education is to develop physically educated individuals who have
the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical
activity.
A physically educated person:
Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and
movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement
concepts, principles, strategies in and tactics as they apply to the learning
and performance of physical activities.
Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity.
Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing
level of physical fitness.
Standard 5: Exhibits responsible personal and social
behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.
Standard 6: Values physical activity for health,
enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and /or social interaction.
2.1: Apply
movement concepts including direction, balance, level, pathway (straight,
curved, zig-zag) range and force absorption to extend
versatility and improve physical performance.
2.2: Use a variety of manipulative (throwing, catching,
striking), loco-motor (running, skipping, hopping, galloping, sliding, jumping,
leaping), and non-loco-motor (twisting, balancing, extending) skills as
individuals and teams.
2.3: Perform rhythm routines, including dancing, to
demonstrate fundamental movement skills.
2.4: Identify physical and psychological changes that
result form participation in a variety of physical activities.
2.5: Explain the benefits of physical fitness to good
health and increased active lifestyle.
2.6: Identify the major behaviors that contribute to
wellness (exercise, nutrition, hygiene, rest, recreation, and refraining from
use of tobacco, alcohol, and other substances).
2.7: Demonstrate responsible personal and social conduct
used in physical activity settings.
