Dear Parents:

Be sure to ask your children about DEAR time, Bravery, Game Day and the Didgeridoo song.

Here is some helpful information…

Snack: Please send it in everyday.  We are starving by 10:10!

Spelling: We use the Houghton Mifflin third grade spelling lists. I will send home a corrected pre-test stapled to a new list on Friday.  The spelling test will be given the following Thursday.  Children who know all the words (or who only miss one or two) on the Friday pre-test, will be given an additional list to study.  As the year progresses, we will stop the pre-test and the additional list will become optional for anyone who wants it.

Homework: Homework will take a variety of forms this year.  Each child will be expected to read 20 minutes per night. A weekly reading log, requiring a parental signature, will go home every Monday.  Everyday Math homework will go home every day (except Game Day) and it is due the following day. There will also be long term projects assigned throughout the year. Children are expected to prepare their homework neatly and carefully.  On occasion two copies will be sent home. Please help your child proofread the rough draft and emphasize the importance of a neatly prepared final copy. Your child will be getting into the routine of reading for twenty minutes, studying spelling words, studying math facts and managing written assignments.

Homework Folder: Each child will be given a sturdy, plastic, blue folder on the first day of school.  They should bring this folder back and forth to school every day.  They are responsible for bringing in any notes from home and putting written work in their homework folder and returning it to school.

Portfolios: I will be sending home much of your child’s work on Fridays (except Journals and stories written in Writing Workshop).  Each child will carefully choose one piece of work each week to save at school in their portfolio.  You will get a chance to see what they have picked later in the year.

Please call me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Suzin Bedell-Healy
