BENCHMARKS FOR GRADES 3, 4 AND 5

In Grades Three, Four and Five, the children are assessed on the following criteria:

1.      Produces both original and creative artwork

What we are looking for here is that the student is adding a unique quality to their art that goes above and beyond meeting the given requirements. We acknowledge that each child is at a different developmental level so we are not considering skill or dexterity but rather the creative energy and effort they put into their work.

The student:

*      Explores ideas

*      Uses art materials creatively

*      Applies techniques artistically

2.      Listens and follows directions and completes tasks on hand

What we are looking for here is how closely the student is paying attention to all of the instructions given for each assignment. If applicable we also consider how well they are integrating previous concepts with new ideas. With this mark we are also looking at the students’ ability to stay focused and use their art time effectively.

The student:

*      Shows a  sincere effort toward their art

*      Is attentive and follows directions

*      Stays on task

3.      Participates and is cooperative during art class

What we are looking for here is how caring and helpful the student is towards others and the environment. We are also looking at the amount of interest and enthusiasm the student displays during art whether it’s participation of ideas, response to questions, or dedication and excitement toward their creations.

The student:

*      Exhibits kind behavior

*      Shows interest and enthusiasm

*      Is helpful and follows the art room rules

4.      Understands Skills and Concepts

What we are looking for here is how clearly the student understands and applies each assignment’s concepts. With this we also consider their level of craftsmanship and care in completion of their assignments. We reiterate that not all students are at the same level but as they progress to higher grades a conscientious behavior in their work habits should develop and their efforts should be more careful and thorough.

The student:

*      Is retaining and applying art concepts

*      Creates thoughtful and detailed work

*      Puts forth a sincere effort

For each of these criteria they will receive one of the following ratings:

*      S = STRONG: means that the student is consistently meeting the criteria

*      D = developing: means that they are meeting the criteria most of the time

*      N = Needs Improvement: means that they need more time and practice in that particular area and that we will work together on developing this

This rating system shows progress and should serve as a benchmark to grow from.

Art is very objective so that needs to be considered. I aim to set clear goals for my students in hopes that they eventually can evaluate their own work. Each student keeps an art portfolio in order to reflect upon what they have learned and to help them progress. These art portfolios will be shared with you and your family in the Spring.
